My name is Moira and I am passionate about yoga and even more passionate about dogs. One day in yoga class, I rolled out my mat and noticed my dog Otis had left a gift of his fur all over it. (Turns out yoga mats are like catnip for dogs.) Sighing, I dipped down into my first Downward-Facing Dog pose and my thoughts wandered a bit. (I have never claimed to be the most mindful of yogis.)
I thought about how much I love Otis. I tried to focus on the asana I was practicing, a bit distracted by my fur-festooned mat. And then – out of nowhere – inspiration struck, dots connected, and the idea for DownDog yoga mats was born. It was a "Eureka!" moment arising from two great passions that I knew I wanted to share with the world.
These days, it’s fairly common to hear people exchange salutations of “Namaste” in yoga class. It’s the Indian equivalent of “hello,” but with an element of respect. Interestingly, the root word nama means "bow." In creating DownDog yoga mats, my hope is to give you an experience of “wow!” Put the two together and the result is something that might just open your heart and stretch your soul.
My dogs Otis and Emma are both rescue pups who have enriched my life immeasurably and have inspired a deep commitment to animal justice and well-being. I am proud to be a recognized business ambassador for the ASPCA, a national leader in the areas of rescue, adoption and welfare that has worked tirelessly for over 150 years to put an end to animal abuse and neglect.
I hope you are inspired by DownDog yoga mats and our commitment to helping dogs (and cats) all across the country find loving, forever homes. I invite you to share your photos with us on Instagram and join our pack in the DownDog Facebook group. But most importantly, I hope that the Divine in you sees the Divine in every dog.
